Señaló, que sólo en la bahía de Santa María se dejó una biomasa de hembras en rango de reproducción de entre cinco a siete toneladas las cuales se multiplican de manera increíble.

MARINE Harvest Scotland and Loch Duart Ltd are both in the same game, producing farmed salmon in the pristine sea lochs off the west coast for a seemingly insatiable global market. But whilst their end products are largely identical, the businesses could not be further apart. One is the Scottish subsidiary of a global corporation - the biggest producer of farmed salmon in the world - which employs more than 4,000 people and has production operations in five countries in addition to Scotland; the other is the newest, and one of the smallest, salmon farms in the country, independent and wholly Scottish owned, employing just 34 people.
As struggling U.S. shrimpers seek protection from a flood of cheap imports, the national consumer organization Public Citizen has opened a separate campaign to spotlight what it views as the health risks of farm-raised shrimp that mostly come from abroad.
"Shrimp farms produce a wretched cocktail of chemicals, shrimp feed and shrimp feces," the campaign's field director, Andrianna Natsoulas, said recently in a prepared statement. "We want consumers to understand the real cost of shrimp and what it's doing to their health."

Researchers at the Oceanic Institute say they are achieving record-breaking shrimp production using a new method, funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. It's called Biosecure Zero-Exchange Shrimp Technology, a closed system that recirculates water and keeps disease agents out. Traditional shrimp farming methods use thousands of times more water.
Despite measures taken to quarantine a virus at a Kaua'i shrimp farm, the disease could spread to native crustaceans and ultimately harm the reef ecosystem, state officials said.
The state Department of Agriculture quarantined Ceatech USA Inc.'s shrimp farm in Kekaha after white spot syndrome virus, which causes serious disease in crustaceans, was discovered earlier this month. The virus is highly contagious and fatal to sea life, but poses no threat to humans, even if infected shrimp are eaten, the state said.
A bill to require restaurants to disclose the national origin of the shrimp they serve was gutted by a Senate panel Thursday. The Natural Resources Committee rewrote Senate Bill 47 by Sen. Chris Ullo, D-Marrero, to allow, but not require, restaurants that serve shrimp or shrimp dishes to display "to its customers information as to the country or state of origin" of the shrimp. The amendments by Sen. Nick Gautreaux, D-Abbeville, passed 6-1 after Ullo left the room to preside over another committee meeting. The bill was then approved on a unanimous vote.

The Wave A few weeks ago, Wave Editor Dan McGovern gave y'all a heads up about the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen and its opposition to shrimp farming. I hope you were paying attention to his warning. Yesterday, the group released a press statement announcing its plans for a new campaign aimed at "educating U.S. consumers about the myriad environmental, health and economic problems surrounding farm-raised shrimp."
I caught up with Andrianna Natsoulas, field director for group, to learn more about the campaign. You might want to pay attention to this. "This campaign will be targeting consumers," Natsoulas told me. "So we're talking about consumers throughout the United States -- inland consumers, coastal consumers. A lot of the inland consumers have been hooked on shrimp through these various family-style restaurants, whether it be Red Lobster or Long John Silver's .the family-style restaurant, inland, has really been the pioneer in hooking consumers on shrimp."

PEOPLE or organisations who produce incorrect or misleading 'evidence' against fish farming need to be met with firm action, even to the point of being taken to court. This is one of the messages delegates to the AquaVision 2004 conference will hear in June.

The first baby boomers, born in 1946, will turn 65 in 2011. Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 are projected to represent 16.5 percent of the total population in 2020, up from 12.4 percent in 2000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. An estimated 70 million Americans will reach 60 by 2020. Meanwhile, the burgeoning U.S. Hispanic population grew 9.8 percent, to 38.8 million, from 2000 to 2002. Hispanics are expected to account for 18 percent of the total population in 2020, up from 12.6 percent in 2000. Studies have shown that these two demographics eat around 25 percent more seafood than the average American, says seafood consultant Howard Johnson of H.M. Johnson & Associates in Jacksonville, Ore. Boomers eat more seafood because they’re health conscious, and Hispanics eat more because seafood is a traditional part of their cuisine. America’s 13.1 million Asians also eat more seafood than most Americans, and Asians are expected to represent 5.8 percent of the total population in 2020, up from 3.9 percent in 2000.
